BBC debates phones being removed from Edinburgh schools

In a recent TikTok video by BBC News, a question was introduced: Should pupils be required to lock their phones away during the school day? This has sparked widespread discussion, garnering over 550,000 likes and more than 14,000 comments.

This debate originated from the news that two high schools in Edinburgh, Portobello High School and Queensferry High School, have implemented a phone-free policy, where mobile phones must be stored in a lockable phone pouch. This is in hopes that students will focus more on their work by removing the distractions caused by mobile phones.

Focus vs Freedom: What’s Best?

Deputy headteacher Luke McAllister recognised that locking phones away was a really good solution when he attended a gig, and that it could work for schools. This way, people can still carry their phones around, and it eliminates the distractions and other concerns that having a phone could bring.

One of the primary arguments in favour of restricting phones is their potential to disrupt concentration. Studies have shown that even the mere presence of smartphones can reduce cognitive ability, as our brains are constantly cautious of the possibility of a notification. By removing the temptation, schools hope to create a more concentrated environment where students can fully engage in lessons.

On the other hand, critics argue that phones can aid in education. From quick research to language translation and even interactive learning apps, mobile devices encourage creativity in how students can access and process information. The challenge distinguishes between creative use and distraction, which often comes to the discipline of the student.

An unseen aspect of this debate is that the telephone ban teaches students about autonomy, making their own decisions. This is the belief that education should focus on distraction and learning how to use equipment in a responsible manner. Strict restrictions can solve immediate behavioural problems, but they can also ignore opportunities to teach digital self-control. Structured boundaries can help young students gradually create these habits in a more supportive environment.

What People Really Think

A popular comment on TikTok argued that having these wallets is a ‘waste of money’ and that ‘a lot of students need their phones for medical reasons’. However, it is noted in this policy that by having students carry their phones around, in case of emergency situations, they would be able to easily access their devices from the unlocking station.

However, just as there are comments arguing against the use of phone pouches, there are others online that are for the policy, stating,  “This is a good idea. Kids need to socialise with each other instead of sitting on their own looking at their phones. This promotes the well-being and social growth of young people.
