More U.S. States Are Banning Phones in Schools

Across the United States, mobile phone restrictions in schools are no longer isolated policies—they’re becoming mainstream.

New data highlighted by Visual Capitalist shows a rapidly growing number of states introducing laws, guidance, or full restrictions around student phone use during the school day. What started as a handful of initiatives has quickly evolved into a nationwide movement, driven by growing concerns around distraction, student wellbeing, cyberbullying, and classroom behaviour.

According to multiple reports, more than half of U.S. states now have some form of legislation, policy recommendation, or statewide restriction in place relating to phones in schools. In many cases, these are “bell-to-bell” policies—meaning phones cannot be accessed at all during the school day.

The shift reflects a broader global trend. UNESCO recently reported that 114 education systems worldwide now have national school phone bans or restrictions in place, up significantly from just a few years ago.

What’s particularly interesting is that support for restrictions is increasingly bipartisan and backed by educators who are seeing the effects firsthand. Teachers and school leaders consistently cite improved focus, better social interaction, calmer school environments, and reduced classroom disruption once phones are removed from daily use.

At the same time, the conversation is evolving beyond simply “banning” phones. Schools are now looking for realistic, enforceable ways to implement policies consistently without creating conflict between staff, students, and parents.

That’s why structured phone management solutions like the Casier de téléphone® pouch are gaining traction internationally. Rather than confiscating devices, students secure their own phones in lockable pouches that stay with them throughout the day—creating a practical balance between access, responsibility, and distraction-free learning.

The reality is simple: schools everywhere are facing the same challenge. And increasingly, governments, educators, and parents are reaching the same conclusion that attention matters.

As momentum continues to build globally, the question is no longer whether schools should address phone use. It’s how they can do it effectively, consistently, and in a way that supports students long term.

Phone Locker® is already helping schools globally implement proven phone-free systems that work in practice, not just on paper. If your school is reviewing its approach to mobile phone management, entrer en contact to see how we can help.
