Yondr Pouch VS PhoneLocker

Yondr pouch vs alternative

Yondr and PhoneLocker are the two most well-known providers of lockable phone pouches. With both phone-bans increasing across the globe, across multiple sectors, we take a look at their differences..

Why phone pouches?

Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007, smartphones have dominated our lives, to the point where recently smartphone owners became the global majority – more than 4.5 billion people now own one.

However, this rapid adoption has hit some resistance; people are now yearning for less intrusion, less distraction, and a desire to be more present in the moment.

Certainly, in schools we’ve seen a change in policy, with many countries banning mobile phones from the classroom. Meanwhile, other sectors are following suit, with boardroom meetings, comedy clubs, and concerts deciding to go phone-free.

To facilitate this need, two major brands – Yondr and PhoneLocker – have come to the forefront. Their patented lockable mobile phone pouches allow users to retain the security of possession, but are unable to use their phones until a special magnet is accessed to unlock the pouches at the right moment.

How it works: How lockable phone pouches work

How do the pouches differ?

Fundamentally, the two offerings from Yondr and PhoneLocker operate in a similar fashion. Available in different sizes to suit various smartphones, once locked, they require a magnet to open again – located at a station at the exit of venue.

The biggest difference between Yondr and PhoneLocker is implementation. Yondr lease their pouches, whereas with PhoneLocker you keep them.

With PhoneLocker’s pouches, you can customise the pouches according to your brand. That could be logos, images and other elements that reflect your organisation’s visual identity. For use within schools, Yondr encourages students to personalise pouches themselves.

Both phone pouches are designed to last and are machine washable. To back up this dedication to quality, PhoneLocker offer a 1-year guarantee.

What’s the price differences between Yondr and PhoneLocker?

This is where the two brands differ the most. Yondr lease their phone pouches, on an annual subscription model. In comparison, with PhoneLocker you own the pouches outright.

Pricing for both is influenced by the amount of pouches ordered. In comparisons, PhoneLocker pricing is around 50% of Yondr’s.

Yondr training, assistance with implementation, and a year of customer service are included as part of the costs. Meanwhile, PhoneLocker also offers support, both in terms of communicating with stakeholders, and the roll-out of phone-free venues. They also offer pilot projects for those wishing to trial the concept.

What countries do Yondr and PhoneLocker sell to?

Yondr is an American based company, with a US patent for their lockable smartphone pouches. Meanwhile, PhoneLocker’s origins began in Australia, but their patent also stretches across Europe.

This is somewhat reflected in where you will see the two brands, with Yondr being well established in the United States, whereas PhoneLocker is mainstream in the UK, Ireland, Australia, France, Belgium, and Germany.

Yondr boasts 5 different offices globally and claims to have partners across 27 countries. In comparison, PhoneLocker manages its European distribution from the UK, with support from licensed partners in over 20 countries.

The growth of both brands is largely down to schools around the world cracking down on students using mobile phones, with pressure from their respective governments. In our dedicated blog post, we explore why lockable mobile phone pouches have become the favoured solution within schools operating a phone ban.

In-Depth: How do the pouches actually work?

If you’re familiar with what the pouches do, but not how they work in practice, you can watch our video below to see the PhoneLocker pouches being used as intended.

Step 1: Who has the pouch?

Depending on use case, the user may own their own pouch, or it may be owned by you. For example, at schools each pupil will own their own lockable pouch and bring it from home each day, but at a comedy gig, the venue will tend to have their own branded pouches which they keep once the night is over.

Step 2: Insert Phone

Once your mobile phone has been placed into the pouch, it’s locked by pressing a pin into the lock. It now can’t be re-opened without a special magnet, normally situated at a building exit.

Step 3: Unlock Pouch

Simply place the pouch by the magnet, and the pouch is open again. At PhoneLocker, we provide cabinets, where the magnets can be securely located. Alternatively, customers can attach the magnets to posts, or simply have staff on hand with magnets as people leave (particularly if the pouches are owned by the venue).

The PhoneLocker lockable pouch features a pouch body with an opening between opposing top ends, allowing easy insertion and removal of the mobile phone. The heart of the pouch lies in its locking clip mechanism. This mechanism consists of a first arm and a second arm that are pivotably connected to each other. In the closed position, the inner surfaces of the arms face each other, ensuring a secure and tamper-proof enclosure.

PhoneLocker’s locking clip incorporates a locking needle attached to the first arm and a locking cup attached to the second arm. When the lockable pouch is in the locked state, the locking needle securely fits inside the locking cup, preventing unauthorized access to the phone stored within. The placement of the first and second arms on the opposing top ends of the pouch body allows for cohesive movement, ensuring ease of use and reliable locking functionality.

The locking needle within the PhoneLocker pouch is designed for flexibility. It can move relative to the first arm, transitioning between a retracted position, where the tip of the needle is flush with or inside the inner surface, and a protruded position, where it extends outwards for secure placement within the locking cup.

PhoneLocker’s innovative design, backed by an Australian patent, provides a robust solution for controlled phone storage. With the ability to securely lock mobile phones away, PhoneLocker encourages individuals to be fully present and engaged in various environments, such as schools, events, or workplaces. By promoting mindful phone usage, PhoneLocker aims to enhance human connections, improve productivity, and create a more focused and interactive atmosphere.

In summary, PhoneLocker offers an Australian patented alternative to Yondr, presenting a lockable pouch specifically designed for mobile phones. With its advanced locking clip mechanism and secure storage capabilities, PhoneLocker enables individuals and organizations to cultivate mindful phone usage, empowering users to be present and engaged in the world around them.
